- So he didn't make it a virus. Nevertheless, the Registration Wizard
- does check your machine for about 100 competing products, and tells
- Microsoft which ones you have. If enough people register online,
- Microsoft will eventually have a good portion of the customer lists
- of these competitors. Think about how valuable this information is -
- for many companies it's one of their most closely guarded secrets.
- Then think again about how ethical this sort of spying is, whether
- it's done by a virus or by other means.

- I know a lot of rumours have been flying, but the above is a summary
- of information obtained by Andrew Schulman (author of "Undocumented
- Windows") by doing some very sophisticated analysis of Windows 95.
- His results were re-posted on alt.folklore.computers a day or two
- ago, in case anyone is interested. I've also archived the message
